Yesterday I attended the Social Media Camp in New York City (part of Internet Week-New York). It was a sold out event that did more than meet my expectations. Not only did the Social Media Camp meet all the requirements that make a camp/conference/workshop/seminar successful, it incorporated new technologies, concepts, formats, etc. - Taking it to the next level.
Tons of information and ideas were exchanged yesterday. It would be impossible for me to recount all that happened, so I decided to wrap up the day (my way) and share why I give Social Media Camp - NY two thumb drives up:
- some name tags read @insert_name and people got it
- no one was afraid to say "i don't know. group?"
- we played on our computers and phones w/out getting yelled at
- ...and STILL (i) never heard one phone ring!
- it was easier to say "google me"
- live streaming
- there were enough outlets for everyone
- a person who was leading a group discussion one hour could be found asking questions the next
- the open space concept was adopted for this camp (and it worked extremely well)
- coffee stayed hot all day
- there was a 'follow' fest
- i was able to laugh with someone who has also received a cease and desist since being on the nets (and i know we were not the two ;)
- it was ok to know
- it was ok to not know
- i wasn't teased about my geek bag
- there were no wrong answers - just yours
- location, location, location - roger smith hotel was a perfect spot
- no one claimed to be an expert
- chris didn't make us hold hands and sing kumbaya in the circle
- i can say i met chris and kristie when...
